Water Dripping From the Ceiling: What to Do Right Now
By JW Moore Plumbing • Updated 2026-09-17
Water coming through a ceiling means a leak above it — and drywall can only hold so much before it collapses.
Step 1: Contain the water
Put a bucket down and, if the ceiling is bulging, poke a small hole in the center to drain it in a controlled spot rather than letting the whole sheet come down.
Step 2: Shut off the water
If the drip started after someone used an upstairs bathroom, shut off the main. If it drips with everything off, it may be a supply line — still shut off the main.
Common sources
Upstairs shower pans and tub drains, toilet wax rings, supply lines to sinks, and in single-story homes, a roof leak or an air-conditioner condensate line.
How plumbers find it
Moisture meters, thermal cameras and acoustic leak detection pinpoint the source so only one small opening is needed.
Call before the damage spreads
A same-day leak repair usually costs a fraction of replacing ceilings, flooring and dealing with mold.
