Low Water Pressure in Your House? Here's What's Causing It
By JW Moore Plumbing • Updated 2026-09-17
Weak showers and slow-filling washers usually trace back to one of a handful of plumbing problems.
A partially closed shutoff valve
Check the main shutoff at the meter and at the house. A valve bumped halfway closed after yard work is the most common — and cheapest — cause.
Clogged aerators and showerheads
Hawaii's hard water leaves calcium scale in fixture screens. If only one fixture is weak, unscrew the aerator and soak it in vinegar.
Corroded galvanized pipes
Older homes with galvanized steel pipes build up rust inside until flow chokes. Brown water is the giveaway. Repiping with copper or PEX restores full pressure.
A hidden leak
A leak in the main water line or under the slab steals pressure and raises your bill. Leak detection finds it without digging up the yard.
A failing pressure regulator
If the whole house lost pressure suddenly, the pressure-reducing valve may have failed. Plumbers can test and replace it in an hour.
