Brown Water From the Faucet: Causes and Fixes

Discolored water is alarming but usually explainable. Here's how to tell whether it's the city, your water heater or your pipes.
Only hot water is brown
Sediment or rust inside the water heater. Flush the tank; if it persists, the tank is corroding from the inside.
Only cold water is brown
Often the municipal supply after hydrant flushing or a main break. Run cold water for 20 minutes. If it persists for days, call the water utility and a plumber.
Brown water everywhere, all the time
Corroded galvanized piping. The rust you see is the inside of your pipes flaking away, which also means low pressure and pinhole leaks are coming.
Whole-house repipe
Replacing galvanized pipe with copper or PEX ends brown water, restores pressure and protects your fixtures and appliances.
Filtration options
Whole-house sediment filters and softeners help with hard water and sand but do not fix rusting pipes.
